My Values Cards Story

In 2010 life was moving in a great trajectory, I was working at a senior management level, and identified in my industry as a subject matter expert giving me the opportunity to consult in an industry for which I had a passion. I had the opportunity to make a difference and a positive difference.

The one morning shutting the front door my life changed. In 30 minutes I was at St Vincent’s Hospital with a suspiciously shattered right arm, which turned out to be an aggressive and serious bone cancer. I spent the most part of the next 18 months in and out of the hospital having equally violent treatments to attack the aggressive cells attacking me!

I needed coping strategies, and one of these was counselling, and I met with Emma regularly. A conversation I’ll never forget was… “Nina, you are extremely goal-oriented, and until now, that’s how you have lived your life.” But now I couldn’t set a goal to have coffee with a friend and know I could achieve it. What Emma explained to be was values, and she took out a list of values that I still have today, and I chose my top 10. She said, your values don’t change. You can live by your values even if you can’t get out of bed, can’t eat, can’t walk, and are too sick to talk., you can still identify and live by your values She explained to me, that if I considered goals the big race, values are the source, barracking on the sidelines and pushing you forward.
